New BLUA Logo – Feedbacks Please!

BLUA stands for Bangladesh Linux Users Alliance, a LUG formed in 2002 primarily to promote the use of GNU/Linux in the country. We’ve come a long way, and today we officially represent Ubuntu and Fedora in Bangladesh as well as working as the local affiliate of Creative Commons.

We’ve started working on to give a complete face-lift to our website, and as a part of it we’ve come up with a new logo for our organisation. Since this blog post will get aggregated on Planet Ubuntu and Planet Fedora, I’d like to take this opportunity to get feedbacks about the logo from all of you. There are some brilliant graphic designers in our community and I’ll sure with all of your inputs we can improve the logo! Please let me know what you honestly think about it, we’ll take all your comments and suggestions in account.

The logo was created by Adnan Quaium using Inkscape, and the font used comes with a “free for commercial use” license.

Ubuntu 9.04 Guide in Bengali

BLUA Documentation Team has published a beginners guide on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) in Bengali, which is available for download from http://linux.org.bd/go.php?link=ubuntuguide (PDF file, 2.7 MB).

If you’re new to Ubuntu Linux and want to learn more about it, then this guide should be helpful to you. The topics covered are installation, package management, network and Internet connection setup, customization, proprietary hardware driver and multimedia support, troubleshooting, and much more.

BLUA February 2007 Meeting

This meeting was a follow-up my e-mail to the BLUA mailing list regarding availability of Mandriva 2007 DVD. The respond was huge, so I decided to call for a meeting.

The meeting was held at Boomers in Banani. The people who joined in were all new faces. We talked about various issues including OSS development, bootloader, firewall, various distributions, and more. What was special about this meeting was presence of a female member, first time in our meeting history. We ain’t got much female Linux users in the country.

BLUA October 2006 Meeting

We initially planned to organise the monthly meeting on October 14th. However, few things messed up and we had to shift it to today. 12 members were present in the meeting, which was held at Metronet office in Gulshan 2. We started at 17:00, and mainly discussed about our upcoming projects, which are:

Royal Bengal Linux
Creative Commons
Mirror Server Project
Media Distribution Project

There was a lot of brainstorming, and we got some good ideas and suggestions form our fellow members. My appreciation to everyone who joined on the meeting, specially to Mr. Rafiqul Islam who acted as the event manager and Mr. Ferdous Azam Khan, CEO of Metronet who was our host. Sorry, no pictures of the event as none of us were carrying a camera!

BCS Computer Show – Day 7

Last day of the computer show! The most-wanted competition was arranged today at Bashani Novotheater seminar room, where 50 students participated. The students were grouped in two sections — Group A: first grade to fifth grade, and Group B: sixth grade to twelfth grade.

The competition started at 3:30 and by 4:30 we were done. Our volunteers checked and marked the answer scripts which was then handed over to BCS athority who will arrange the prize distribution ceremony at a later date.

Record number of visitors and record number of kids came to the show. Our volunteers had tough time entertaining the demanding kids! The kids waited on the queue for 5-10 minutes before they could sit on a computer. Around 350 kids learned how to use Edubuntu Linux!

BCS Computer Show – Day 5

Hartal and heavy rainfall dramatically reduced the number of visitors in computer show. Our dedicated volunteers still came over to help, and entertained the kids who came from the neighborhood. I’m sure that the kids learned a lot since each of them got a good amount time to see the workarounds of a Linux desktop!

Rony and I watched the planetarium show, which was quite amazing. I watched the same type of show in Birla Planetarium in Calcutta, but liked today’s one since it’s in Bengali. However I didn’t understand some Bengali terms… but still it was fun.

The second seminar co-organised by BLUA was held today. Mr. Nazrul Islam of Relief International delivered his keynote speech on Telecenters networks of Bangladesh. The seminar was entitled “ICT for Developement: Prospects of Telecenters in Bangladesh”.

Our member Raihanul Kabir Rony’s picture was published on Prothom-Alo, and he was very happy about it. I’m happy about it too!

BCS Computer Show – Day 3

Our pavilion was super-hit by evening. We entertained more than 100 kids, all of whom were taught how to use an Edubuntu desktop, how to draw pictures on Tux Paint, and how to use the different educational tools. The kids absolutely loved it!

BLUA volunteers entertained numerous newbie Linux users as well, whom we gave suggestions and solutions to their OS problems.
