Say you had unprotected sex with your partner. Maybe the condom broke. Maybe the diaphragm or the IUD got misplaced. Or maybe, God forbid, you became a victim of sexual assault. What do you do now? If all this had occurred within the last 3 days, then look no further — get yourself a pack of “Emcon 1” from your local pharmacy.
Important update: Emcon has been rebranded as “Emcon 1”, it is now a single dose medicine instead of double.
A pack of Emcon 1 contains a white-coloured pill, containing 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel. Applied in a single dose, this progestin-only drug prevents ovulation or fertilisation, and hence protects against pregnancy. Emcon 1 is being manufactured and marketed by Renata Limited in Bangladesh. Outside Bangladesh, you can find this drug under following trade names: Plan B, Levonelle, NorLevo, Postinor or iPill.
If taken in proper timing, this emergency contraceptive (EC) or “morning-after” pill will be up to 95% effective. So how to take it? Take the pill as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It works best if taken within 12 hours, so try to do so if possible. You should remember that more delay you do to take the pill, the less protection you’ll get against pregnancy.
Stuffs to Remember:
- Emcon 1 should not taken on a regular basis
- Emcon 1 is not to be used an alternative of regular birth control pills — emergency cases only
- If you vomit within 3 hours of taking a pill, take another immediately.
- Common side effects are abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness.
You will know if it worked as intended or not if you get your menstrual period within 7 to 10 of taking the pill. For further details, read the following literature carefully:

I have done the test and it shows positive, I’m pregnant. I wouldn’t recommend that pill to my collegues if they get in this situation because the pill is not as effective as it state.

Sue: If it’s Emcon containing 750 μg Levonorgestrel then you need to take one first, and then the second one after 12 hours. Taking two at once will be very helpful… however you can try single dose pills such as “Plan B” or “iPill”.

Hadi: The answer is both yes and no, you didn’t leave sufficient information for me to answer. If period doesn’t start by June 30th, then do a pregnancy test the same day to confirm.

Taka: You’re supposed to take 2 Emcon pills, you only wrote about 1 — if that is so, then it’ll not give you any protection against pregnancy. If you had taken both (2nd one after 12 hours of taking the 1st one), then you should be safe.

i surely will but the tought of being pregnant at a really young age is kiling me..although im not even sure me and my boyfriend even did it…i dnt feel any diffrent..i took the pill and i didnt have any side effects…

Tokai: Emcon will only work if the second pill is taken timely as well — read my post again for clarification. Pregnancy test is not necessarily if menstruation starts within 15 days of intercourse, if not go ahead with it after that. Pregnancy test strips are available in all pharmacies and they are very cheap.

Since the pills were taken in proper time, I’m pretty sure that she’s safe — she should have a light or moderate menstrual flow between 3th to 6th August, which will indicate that she’s not pregnant. Please ask your partner NOT to be tensed about this and to stay very relaxed, as stress or tension causes delay in flow in many cases.

URGENT I and my wife had intercourse and she took 1st Emcon within 12 hrs, then she took the second pills after around 11 hours, then we had sex again 9 hours after 2nd pill. Does my wife need to take Emcon (2 pills) again?. Her last period was from 29 July to 2 Aug. Is she ok?
BS: Oh my God, are you crazy? What on earth were you thinking when you had sex for the second time? Emcon will NOT protect your against pregnancy, even if you take 2 more pills now. It is now completely up to nature on what will happen to her.
Mr Russell, I should say OMG instead you. I maybe over-relied on Emcon and so disappointed with your answer. Did the package mentioned Emcon doesn’t function in this situation? OK! nothing we can do but go to hell. what will be the proper syndrome after taking Emcon? Will the menstruation come with few days? Does it mean if she can’t have period within your answer. Does it mean we need to consult the doctor? Hope you can reply soon.
BS: The mistake that you made was having unprotected sex after having the pills. Emcon works 95% of the time when taken properly, and and it should have work on your case as well if you didn’t go for the second round. Anyways, you’ll need to wait for a week now to see if her menstruation starts or not, and if it doesn’t within 2 weeks, then go for a home-bases pregnancy test (on the 15th day of having the last intercourse). There is a high risk of her getting pregnant, but let’s hope that she doesn’t. Please be careful the next time.
But I don’t understand why even I take 2nd set of Emcon after 2nd round, it won’t work?
BS: Because it is a hormone pill and it doesn’t work like a pain-killer. Not only that it’ll not be effective when taken the second time within such a short period, one also shouldn’t as it’ll create a lot of medical complications. It is an emergency pill and should only be used on emergency cases, it is not meant to be replaced with a regular birth control method.

Condom broke around 7:30pm the 27th Oct. She couldn’t get the to take the first pill until around 6pm the next day and the other around 12hrs later. Am really paranoid about this whole situation! To make matters worse, she just had her period around the 22nd. We’re going to go insane waiting that long to see if she comes down with her period next month. Should we be worried? or anything we should know? Any signs we should look for? Thanks for any advice or reply!
RCM: Apparently she’s safe if you’re correct about the timings you mentioned here, and the good thing is you did it on the 5th day from starting her last period which is generally a safe time. She should have a light period between 7th to 10th day counting from 28th September (you wrote October by mistake I guess?). Best of luck and don’t worry much, worrying will not help much now but science will! Let me know what happens.

I had sex with my gf @ october 5, 2011. For first 1 min I didn’t use a condom(I didnt came in) but after that I used condomm. after reading this blog i got tensed about “pre come”. So, My gf took emcon (1st pill after 58 hours having sex)she hadnt felt any side effect. Her menstruation was due in oct 19. In october 16 she had mens for 3 days ending in october 19. now she’s getting bad smell from every kind of cooked food and feel like vomitting. We are pretty much tensed. Is there any possibilty that she’s pregnant?
Perplexed: She’s not pregnant, so don’t worry — nausea or vomiting is very normal now, this is the side effect of the pill. It’ll take quite some time for her next period to start and there’s nothing to worry about it. Make sure you wear the condom in proper time in the future to avoid mental torment like this.

My GF’s first day of her last period was 15th oct & it lasted till 20th. On 25th We had unprotected sex & she took emcon on 27th(after 48 hrs) & next pill after 12 hrs. On 28th we had sex again & used a condom. But unfortunately the condom broke. This time she didn’t took emcon. One thing I can ensure you: I didnn’t ejaculate inside her either times, only precum might go into the vagina.
Now from 7th november till today She started having very very light period which is very unusual for her. Before this, Usually she bled regulary & fluently during her period. So we are very tensed if she got conception. How can we be sure about her pregnancy? When should We do the test?

If she doesn’t want to get pregnant then she should take Emcon as soon as possible, the quicker, more effective it’ll be. Unprotected sex is always “dangerous”, no matter when you do it.
