Emcon 1 – The "Morning-After" Pill

Say you had unprotected sex with your partner. Maybe the condom broke. Maybe the diaphragm or the IUD got misplaced. Or maybe, God forbid, you became a victim of sexual assault. What do you do now? If all this had occurred within the last 3 days, then look no further — get yourself a pack of “Emcon 1” from your local pharmacy.

Emcon 1

Important update: Emcon has been rebranded as “Emcon 1”, it is now a single dose medicine instead of double.

A pack of Emcon 1 contains a white-coloured pill, containing 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel. Applied in a single dose, this progestin-only drug prevents ovulation or fertilisation, and hence protects against pregnancy. Emcon 1 is being manufactured and marketed by Renata Limited in Bangladesh. Outside Bangladesh, you can find this drug under following trade names: Plan B, Levonelle, NorLevo, Postinor or iPill.

If taken in proper timing, this emergency contraceptive (EC) or “morning-after” pill will be up to 95% effective. So how to take it? Take the pill as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It works best if taken within 12 hours, so try to do so if possible. You should remember that more delay you do to take the pill, the less protection you’ll get against pregnancy.

Stuffs to Remember:

  • Emcon 1 should not taken on a regular basis
  • Emcon 1 is not to be used an alternative of regular birth control pills — emergency cases only
  • If you vomit within 3 hours of taking a pill, take another immediately.
  • Common side effects are abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness.

You will know if it worked as intended or not if you get your menstrual period within 7 to 10 of taking the pill. For further details, read the following literature carefully:

  • she dint try to understand me. How can i give a clear picture to her. She thinks that fall in a some serious deasis.

  • My GF’s first day of her last period was 29 nov & it lasted till 2nd dec. On 3rd dec We had unprotected sex at 12 pm & she took emcon on 3rd dec(after 9 hrs) & next pill after 12 hrs. On 4th dec we had sex at 1pm again & used a condom. Once again she took Emcon 2 pil like previous way.
From 11 dec to 15 dec She started having period which is very unusual for her. Now today is 3rd January her menstruation date is delayed. She is feeling some pain in her stomach. So we are very tensed if she got conception. How can we be sure about her pregnancy? When should We do the test?

  • Rainbow: First of all, she’s not pregnant. Second of all, it was completely stupid of you guys to consume 4 Emcons in under 48 hours. Who gave you this suggestion? It was very foolish to use the second packet this early, there should be at least few months of gap between using the next pack (the more the gap, the better).
Her period will be delayed now, don’t worry about it. She can expect it in around mid January. Stomach-ache and other side-effects are normal. Please read my post carefully and you’ll get the picture. Regarding pregnancy test, you can do it now using a home based test kit that are available in pharmacies. Let me know if you’ve more questions.

  • My GF’s last period was 03 December,2011. We always use condom. But we are afraid because her period has being late. If she will be pregnant, what can we do to abortion? plz suggest any medicine.

  • ABC: It’s barely a month, I won’t call it late. Late means like over 45 days. If you’ve always used protection then why are you even worried about it?

  • We are confused. We both have no much knowledge about this. We have been doing for 1year and every month we have been afraid. But after everything it always become negative. But this time we are more afraid. So we need to know about what we will do, when it will be positive.?

  • ABC: Are you from Bangladesh? Anyway wherever you’re from, it’s clear that they didn’t teach you sex education in school, which is not good. Please use a condom every time you make love, that will do. Even condoms aren’t very reliable, they tend to break, and if not worn properly semen may leak which will cause pregnancy. Also, since you wrote you’ve been doing it every month for a year now, why don’t she use regular birth control pills?
I don’t know how old you guys are or your background, so if you let me know further details I can leave you with more tips. Specific questions will be good, so feel free to ask.

  • Yes I m from Dhaka. I m 22 and she is 21. We are confused because may be condoms wasn’t worn properly and semen may leak. How can I test pregnancy at home?

  • Can she get pregnant with the “pre-cum”. And if she does take the pills how will it effect her menstrual cycle? Can you please help me out here?

  • We had unprotected sex. My girlfriend took the first pill 16 hour after sex. She took the second pill 10 hour after she took the first pill. Is she safe? Please let me know asap

  • Shadowfax: The 2nd pill is to be taken 12 hours after taking the 1st pill, not before that — since you made a mishap in timing, it might not work, but let’s just hope that it does.

  • sorry…..the 2nd pill was taken 15 hours after the first pill…..not 10…tht was a typo…wud she be ok??

  • Hi Mr. Russell, just seeking your professional opinion on this situation. It starting to worrying us a bit. My GF have taking the pill 3 times since November and have now her period is more than a week late. We realized it could have complications and have now done everything possible to avoid it since then. She took the first Nov 20, 2011 and her period started Nov 28. Took another Dec 16 and Dec 22 she had her period again. Then finally took it Dec 31 and had Jan 5, 2012. Since her last period January 5 she hadn’t had another yet, and we have done everything properly to not have her taking another pill or getting pregnant.
Is this just a reaction for take the pill or do u think it something we should be worried about?

  • RM: The delay in the next period is because of the pill, this is very normal. However, taking the pills 3 times in 1 month time was a grave mistake, please don’t let her do it again if you really care for her. Taking Emcon or similar pills in such short timing can cause a lot of problems, so avoid it in the future. Use it only in case of true emergencies, and not a replacement of regular contraceptive like condoms or regular birth control pills such as Nordette-28.

  • Thanks for clearing that up. I did realize it was a terrible mistake and after reading online about the effects I made sure nothing happen that would result in her having to take another one! Wishing I hadn’t and hoping nothing’s wrong with her. Thanks again for taking the time out to respond.

  • i have bought emcon 1 and my gf took it after 8 hours of our unprotected sex…but there is only one tablet of 1.5 mg inside the packet….now after 12 hours does she need to take another one? plz help…

  • Rashed: It is NOT Emcon, please check the packet carefully! Emcon is manufactured in Bangladesh by Renata Ltd, and comes with 2 tablets, not 1. I’m sure you bought something else.

  • sir i checked the packet..then i discussed again with the doctor…she told it’s alright, take only one…and yes it’s renata named ’emcon 1′ , 15 mg…. :-s

  • Rashed: I wasn’t aware that Renata had launched “Emcon 1”, thanks for sharing the information with me. According to studies both the pills (single dose or double dose) are almost equally effective, so best of luck!

  • * does she hav to take the 1st pill after sex ?
    * is there any relation with mens to take the emcon ?
    * after 2 or more unprotected sex, can she take the emcon ? & how much garrant is it (emcon)
    plz reply…………………

  • My boyfrnd paid me a visit and stayed for 3 days, ths r th days i expected my periods, we had sex without protection bt i took both of pills immediately he left,cn i still be save,?coz my periods are due with 1 day.,,plz reply

  • Regie: If you’re on a regular menstrual cycle then you’re safe, otherwise I’ve doubts as you took the pills after 3 days of intercourse… Emcon works best within 12 hours of 1st intercourse, and after that more the delay the less protection it gives against pregnancy. Anyway, since you took the pills there will be delay in period now, expect it after 7-10 days — my best guess is that you’re safe.

  • Thanx 4 thy answer bt th only worry is, my periods do late 4 lyk 3 days evry month..like 4 nov16-19,dec,.it ws frm 19-22..jan,frm 22-25,xo ths tym round its lyk i xpect during 25…im afraid coz 4 ths month hav took th pills 3 tyms…..im jst confused

  • Is emcon 1 is r8 tablet ? Last day i took ds pill after 15 mints later unprotectd sex,nd there only had 1 pill , m i safe now ? Plz ans me

  • My wife had taken emcon in 22nd January 2012. And again she had to take it on 13 March 2012. Is there any problem of taking Emcon less than 2 months.

  • Can my GF get conception by the fluid called Pre-come? I didn’t ejaculate inside her vagina. We had unprotected sex on February 24 when her last period occurred from February 15 to February 19. She didn’t take emcon either. If we want to do the home based pregnancy test then what is proper time for it? I meant after how many days of intercourse conception will be detected? If she get conception now then what are ways to do abortion

  • RanjanBD: Yes, pregnancy can happen from pre-cum. Looking at the dates you mentioned you had intercourse during an “unsafe” period, so you should go ahead with the test — which you can try out now. Let me know what happens and I’ll answer your further questions based on that. Best of luck to both of you.

  • OMG!!! It shows positive.. We must have to abort. How can we do this? Where can we do this safely? Tell in details.

  • RanjanBD: First of all, don’t panic and don’t run away from your girlfriend! For now, please use a different brand of test kit and re-test using the first urine in the morning — this will ensure that the previous result wasn’t false-positive.
If it shows positive, then please visit your nearest “Mary Stopes” clinic and consult about your abortion options. Stay away from spooky abortion clinics that are now present in different places, it is very risky to use their services.
Anyway, personally I’m against abortions for philosophical reasons, you can read about my views here. Please consider marrying your girlfriend and accepting the child if you two are not too young.
I wish you two the best of luck, whatever you do, don’t do anything stupid.

  • My wifes period date was 4th march & it continues upto 9th march.she took emcon(single dosepack) in the 5th day(8th march) of her period because of unsafe intercourse and after 3days later(11th march) she took another emcon1 for the same reason. From 15th march light bleeding started and till now it is contined.i am so worried about it.plz tell me what can i do? is she safe??

  • Rassel: First 7 days counting from the first day of starting menstruation is considered safe time** for intercourse, so there was no need of using Emcon… at least not on 8th March. Anyway, since she’s having menstruation once again it means Emcon has worked and she’s not pregnant.
** For women with regular menstrual cycle, ranging from 26 to 32 days interval.

  • Thnx for ur kind information.but sir, bleeding that occuring now are not like the bleeding that occurs in the menstrual period. The bleeding is very slight and what will be the next period date.

  • Rassel: I understand what you’re saying, but this type of flow is very normal now — don’t worry about it at all. There will be a delay in the next “regular” period, it can take up to 2 months. Again, don’t worry about it, this is again very normal.

  • Hi,
My wife took 1 emcon1 at last dec 21, then another at Feb 10 and another two at Feb 20 and 23 and then another at March 11. No she is having Nausea, feel weak, and temperature up and down.Is it emcons side effect?

  • Rana: OMG, 4 doses in a month? This is a simply abuse on her poor body! Emcon is an emergency pill, it is not for replacing your regular birth control method such as condom or monthly pill! Whatever she’s feeling now are surely side-effects, it was very foolish of having it 4 times in a month time. Please refer to previous comments on this page, I’ve answered similar questions before. Anyway, lastly, please do a pregnancy test after March 25th (assuming last unsafe intercourse was on March 11th) to see if she’s expecting or not.

  • Ok.I warned her about it, but she wouldn’t listen. Will she be allright? I am very worried. We will take the pregnancy test. Thanks for your time.

  • Rana: She’ll eventually be alright, but do consult a doctor if the side-effects gets worse. Also, please make sure that she doesn’t take Emcom for at least the next 3-4 months. Do a home based pregnancy test on by the end March, even if she has a menstrual flow before that. Best of luck to both of you.

  • Hello Russell, Me and my partner had protected sex several times and she had 2 Emcon 1 pill on 2 different day for precaution. but after Having the last Emcon 1 we did again but i didn’t erect on her. Her cycle doesn’t start yet. She told me it should b start 3 days before. is there any chance to conceive? Did Emcon 1 protect unsafe sex after having it? Pls reply. IT’S URGENT….

  • Aurora: In order to you give you proper advice I need to know the date of unprotected sex, when she had the Emcon pills, her period is on a regular cycle or not, etc. Please refer to previous questions left by other readers above so that you know what details you’re supposed to let me know first.
