Say you had unprotected sex with your partner. Maybe the condom broke. Maybe the diaphragm or the IUD got misplaced. Or maybe, God forbid, you became a victim of sexual assault. What do you do now? If all this had occurred within the last 3 days, then look no further — get yourself a pack of “Emcon 1” from your local pharmacy.
Important update: Emcon has been rebranded as “Emcon 1”, it is now a single dose medicine instead of double.
A pack of Emcon 1 contains a white-coloured pill, containing 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel. Applied in a single dose, this progestin-only drug prevents ovulation or fertilisation, and hence protects against pregnancy. Emcon 1 is being manufactured and marketed by Renata Limited in Bangladesh. Outside Bangladesh, you can find this drug under following trade names: Plan B, Levonelle, NorLevo, Postinor or iPill.
If taken in proper timing, this emergency contraceptive (EC) or “morning-after” pill will be up to 95% effective. So how to take it? Take the pill as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It works best if taken within 12 hours, so try to do so if possible. You should remember that more delay you do to take the pill, the less protection you’ll get against pregnancy.
Stuffs to Remember:
- Emcon 1 should not taken on a regular basis
- Emcon 1 is not to be used an alternative of regular birth control pills — emergency cases only
- If you vomit within 3 hours of taking a pill, take another immediately.
- Common side effects are abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness.
You will know if it worked as intended or not if you get your menstrual period within 7 to 10 of taking the pill. For further details, read the following literature carefully:

She had the 1st Pill on morning of 9th Mar’12, 2nd on 10th Mar’12 morning. And we had unprotected intercourse(but not erect)on 11th mar’12 night. Her period is regular. but in this month its already 3 days late……… what should i do?
Aurora: Doesn’t matter if you eject or not, sperm cells are of microscopic sizes and they can get her pregnant for the 3rd intercourse. Anyway, I’m hoping this is not the case and I’m assuming that her menstruation will start by 26th of March. If not, then do a home based pregnancy test on the same day. Also, you should know that the next period after this one will be delayed for up to about to 2 months, you can forget the date of last “regular” date of menstruation as it no longer counts. Do let me know what happens in a couple of days.

Aurora: No I’m not a doctor. Please tell her not to be tensed about it, as tension/stress is a major factor for delayed periods. Tell her not to worry about it all! Also, the test should be done using the first urine in the morning on 26th March, only in case if her period doesn’t start before that. Lastly, please don’t use Emcon regularly as it’s side-effects are very unpleasant. Will be happy if you leave an update on your issue in the next few of days. Best of luck to you two!

Rudro: The light flow after a week meant that Emcon 1 has done it’s job, i.e. she isn’t pregnant. There was no need to do the pregnancy test, but it’s nice of you to be thoughtful. Here’s the answers to your questions:
1) If you didn’t had unprotected intercourse after having the last Emcon 1, then there’s nothing to worry about pregnancy.
2) Her next period will be delayed, for up to about two months — this is normal and there is nothing to worry about. If it happens in right time (little chance of it), then that is fine too.
3) The reason of this delay is Encom 1, her “new” cycle should be counted from the 8th day when she had the light flow, and not the date of the last “regular” period. Counting from “new” day, expect it within 26 days to 60 days.
Lastly, word of advice for you: please don’t use Emcon 1 on regular basis, that is once or twice monthly, it should be used only in emergencies — such that when you don’t have the condom, or the condom breaks or leaks, or any act that is unsafe. Using it once in 3-4 months in OK, otherwise it’ll cause a lot of side effects to your partner, and at one time you’ll find that the medicine is no longer effective in your case.

Arif: Since you’ve been doing it using protection so far, I’d ask you to continue that until you get married. This way, you’ll not be in trouble if she gets pregnant. However if you can’t resist your temptations of doing it without protection, then get a pack of Emcon for her and that should work just fine. Using “regular” pill will not work in your case now, there are certain rules and timing for using them. You may use them after getting married, no problem with that.

Riya: It doesn’t matter if he ejaculates or not, penetration is enough to get you pregnant. Emcon only works if you take it within 72 hours, but looking at the times you mentioned you took it after way after that… so Emcon is not going to protect you. You might get pregnant, or might not, there’s no guarantee.
What can i do now?
Riya: All you can do now is wait for your period. In case Emcon worked, you should expect menstrual flow with the next 2 weeks. If it doesn’t happen, then do a home-based pregnancy test on 18th May morning (assuming you’re NOT engaging in unsafe intercourse since 2nd May). If the result is negative, and wait for 1 more week, and do the test again. If it appears negative again then you should assume that you’re not pregnant and should wait for your next menstrual cycle to start. All the best, and feel free to ask more questions if you’ve any.

now it is “Emcon 1” having 1 tablet 1.5 mg dose.
What is the difference??
Does it “2 Emcon tablet”=”1 emcon-1 tablet”?
If so, why was the time binding for 2nd tablet (12-24 hrs) in case of Emcon?

Sharika: Yes you’re right, 2 old “Emcon” tablets = 1 new “Emcon 1”. It is now a single-dose pill instead of double. You should take just 1 pill as soon as possible within 72 hours, but it’ll work best if taken within the first 12 hours.
The reason why they changed the dose is pretty obvious, a lot of women were confused about the timing of old double-dose pill, and were inclining to single-dose pills such as Indian “iPill” or German “Postinor 1”.
