Say you had unprotected sex with your partner. Maybe the condom broke. Maybe the diaphragm or the IUD got misplaced. Or maybe, God forbid, you became a victim of sexual assault. What do you do now? If all this had occurred within the last 3 days, then look no further — get yourself a pack of “Emcon 1” from your local pharmacy.
Important update: Emcon has been rebranded as “Emcon 1”, it is now a single dose medicine instead of double.
A pack of Emcon 1 contains a white-coloured pill, containing 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel. Applied in a single dose, this progestin-only drug prevents ovulation or fertilisation, and hence protects against pregnancy. Emcon 1 is being manufactured and marketed by Renata Limited in Bangladesh. Outside Bangladesh, you can find this drug under following trade names: Plan B, Levonelle, NorLevo, Postinor or iPill.
If taken in proper timing, this emergency contraceptive (EC) or “morning-after” pill will be up to 95% effective. So how to take it? Take the pill as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It works best if taken within 12 hours, so try to do so if possible. You should remember that more delay you do to take the pill, the less protection you’ll get against pregnancy.
Stuffs to Remember:
- Emcon 1 should not taken on a regular basis
- Emcon 1 is not to be used an alternative of regular birth control pills — emergency cases only
- If you vomit within 3 hours of taking a pill, take another immediately.
- Common side effects are abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness.
You will know if it worked as intended or not if you get your menstrual period within 7 to 10 of taking the pill. For further details, read the following literature carefully:

Riaz: These are the side-effects of having Emcon and it is very normal. She should have her period within a few days, no worries on that (a light flow, not regular period). It is too early for pregnancy test now, the result will be negative anyway. Also, I hope she only had a single pill after the first unsafe intercourse and not more than that. If she doesn’t have period within 14th of this month, then do get back to me. All the best, and do tell her not to stay tensed about this as tension can cause delay in menstrual cycle.

Berkly: As I said, this is completely normal. She shouldn’t take more than 2 Tylenol tablets a day with 6 hours interval, 1 should be suffice though.

Riaz bhai, I don’t think she’s pregnant — the delay is probably because she’s too scared or tensed about marriage/new family/and obviously sex — but to be sure, you can now do a home-based pregnancy test using the pregnancy kits available in pharmacies (they work after 2 weeks of having intercourse, so now’s the time). The feeling that you mentioned (that it’s going to happen anytime) happens to a lot of woman, this is perfectly OK. Let me know what the test result is. I’d like to know about your current birth control method as well, I might give you some tips on it. All the best!

bro,on 25th dec i had my 1st sex with condom and it was ok..bt i was worried and so i take a pill on 25th with in 12 hrs.on 30th novmber my period started.and stay till 5 days.and it was less quantity thn normal.bt on 15th dec we also met.and i took emcon pill within 72 hrs(with protection,condom).now,i want to know is it risky?is there any risk of pregnency because of taking two pill with in 1 month?

Riaz bhai, I wrote a response for you but just realized that it didn’t get published somehow! Anyway writing again now. Since the pregnancy test was negative, there is nothing to worry. Wait for a week or so for her period (even a light flow will do), and if it doesn’t happen then try doing the test once again with the first pee in the morning just to be very sure. Regarding birth control method, I’d suggest regular birth control pills like Ovacon, Marvelon, or Nordett-28. These pills are very safe, and there are no side-effects whatsoever. There are many myths such as these pill make woman to gain weight, but studies has shown that this is not true. Best would be to visit a doctor once and he can suggest the best pill for your wife. I wish you all the best, do let me know if you’ve any more questions in the future.
Synthia: Well, you’ll not get pregnant this time as well, but having 2 pills in such a short time was mistake. Emcon seriously messes up the body’s normal hormone system, and you’ll have to deal with it now… side-effects and so on that I mentioned on my post. Wait for your period now, and don’t consume the pill the next 5-6 months or so. If the condom is used properly, it’ll protect you from pregnancy. Best of luck.

Himu: Emcon is not for “delaying periods” and since you’ll be staying together for 10 days, Emcon is not the right solution for you. Better use condoms, the “natural” method is very risky. Regular pills will not work on her either at this point of time.

Nisas: Forget the strip, go to a prominent diagnostic center and tell them you need to do a pregnancy test. They will give you a test tube for collecting urine sample. You’ll get the report the next day. Let me know what report you get from them. I’m pretty sure you’re pregnant, but this will confirm it.
